Over twenty years ago, the Center for Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics (CMSP) was started within the Department of Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Biophysics to make available mass spectrometry-based technologies to UMN researchers in the then-emerging area of proteomics.  Over the years, the CMSP has also responded to the needs of University investigators seeking to characterize metabolites, lipids and other biologically important small molecules, using customized mass spectrometry-based approaches.  These services have steadily grown, such that metabolomic projects now make up a significant proportion of the projects supported by the CMSP.  Therefore, we have decided to “re-brand” the facility, now going by the name “Center for Metabolomics and Proteomics” to better reflect this balance of services offered.  For simplicity, we will still go by the long-standing abbreviation “CMSP”.  While we will continue to offer a full suite of services in proteomics, we hope this name change will help highlight the many services we offer in metabolomics as well.
